Just as Herman Cain could have been getting the Politico story about accusations of sexual harassment behind him, liberal activist Gloria Allred steps forward with a new client who claims to have been a victim of Cain’s misconduct during his tenure as President of the National Restaurant Association. In a press conference [see the video below this post] that featured the usual grandstanding and self promotion of the always obnoxious Gloria Allred, she introduced one Sharon Bialek, who eventually went on to present damning testimony against Cain.
According to Bialek, during an encounter at a restaurant industry event in Chicago , Herman Cain, in her words, “reached for my genitals”
A partial transcript of the Allred staged press conference has Bialek describing the encounter as such:
At that time I had on a black pleated skirt, a suit jacket and a blouse. He had on a suit with his shirt open. But instead of going into the offices, he suddenly reached over and he put his hand on my leg under my skirt and reached for my genitals. He also grabbed my head and brought it towards his crotch. I was very, very surprised and very shocked. I said, “What are you doing? You know I have a boyfriend. This isn’t what I came here for.”
Mr. Cain said, ‘You want a job, right?’ I asked him to stop, and he did. I asked him to take me back to my hotel, which he did right away.
Ms. Bialek’s intricate story of sexual harassment begins when she claims to have solicited Mr. Cain for employment after she was let go from the National Restaurant Association for unrelated reasons.
Bialek also claims that more recently, she was invited to a TEA Party event where unbeknownst to her, Herman Cain was a speaker. She introduced herself to Cain and hoped that he would recognize her and show any sign of remorse for the conduct she accuses of him. But according to Bialek, Herman Cain looked a little nervous upon seeing her, and aknowledged that he did remember for the National restaurant Association but did not acknowledge remembering their last encounter together.
Bialek adds, that she never filed a complaint with the National Restaurant Association because she was not employed by the trade organization at the time.
But that leads one to wonder why she did not file a complaint with the appropriate law enforcement agencies?
Seeing as how Gloria Allred is behind this dog and pony show, I tend to want to overlook the allegation. Add to that the fact that the smiling Bialek did not seem the least bit displeased by reliving the event, and I am quite suspicious of a society that is far to greedy to allow the truth to get in their way of making a buck. However; unlike the two or three previous women who allegedly accused Cain of sexual harassment, this one has a face and name. That makes the charges more real to some. And while the Cain campaign has claimed that Bialek’s story is not true, the question now becomes can Cain survive a media covered ‘he said, she said story’, that does not seem to be going away anytime soon?
For her part Bialek claims she just wants Herman Cain to admit to his misconduct so that the nation can move on. She adds that she has come forward for all those women who have been mistreated by Cain and women everywhere who have had to suffer the indignity of sexual harassment.
That sounds nice, but one can’t help but wonder why Sharon Bialek and ambulance chaser Gloria Allred didn’t make their case at anytime during the last year that Mr. Cain has been a publicly discussing his presidential run. For that matter, one must wonder why the two women did not join forces at any point during the 14 years prior to his running for President?
As I have stated before, where there is smoke there is usually fire, and while I still believe that Herman Cain is innocent until proven guilty, politics is not quite as lenient. Politics is perception and between the way Herman Cain mishandled the sexual harassment accusations from the very beginning, to now, as a face is finally placed on accuser who is going public with her story, maintaining a perception of himself that is positive, is going to be an uphill battle for Herman Cain.
But you will note that I say it will be an uphill battle and not an impossible cause.
The Bialek/Allred press conference was eerily reminiscent of the Gennifer Flowers incident involving an extramarital affair between her and then Governor Bill Clinton. In that case, there were even damming tape recordings of phone conversations between the two. Bill Clinton successfully overcame that controversial point his campaign. But in this case, the conduct Herman Cain is being accused of is against the law. And while infidelity is not a demonstration of good moral conduct, sexual harassment is a demonstration of illegal conduct and therefore, in may ways is a much more serious charge.
At the moment, the outcome of this case of he said, she said, will ultimately come down to the media’s handling of the matter. If there is little credible evidence supporting Bialek’s story, the story will fade away. If not Herman Cain can only hope that time heals these wounds and mark my words, rightly or wrongly, Herman Cain is wounded.
